Dean Gangstee trike
Phoenix
This is my trike Phoenix. It is called that because it was reborn from a 1972 salvage frame that was once made to have a fiberglass body on it. I didn't have the body so I decided to add some tubing around the main tube going to the neck. This allowed me to have an area of sheet metal for the instruments as well as floorboards. The rear seat frame is made from 3/4" water pipe that I formed with a conduit bender. It bolts to the main chassis and so it is removable. The fork is a box girder design that is very strong for the 45 degree rake. The front 16" wheel has no brake, the rear has Neal disk brakes that stop very well. All drivers controls except for the shifter are on the handlebars and are all aftermarket Harley-Davidson type, The hydraulic clutch master cylinder sits beside the brake cylinder between the foot pedals. All controls were designed to fit me since I drive it daily.
From the rear you can see the stock 1600 VW engine. The 1600 is enough to push the trike quickly to 100+ MPH. It cruses comfortably at that speed though I normally run around 65 MPH. The carb is a Webber progressive two barrel feeding the dual port heads. The generator has been replaced with an alternator and is much more effective. The exhaust pipes are metal baffled units from Bugpack and have a not too loud throughty sound. I can remove the baffles whenever I wanna make some noise.
The tour box was added recently and is soon to be painted to match the rest of the candy apple red paint. The turn signal lights are aftermarket Harley type, the stoplight is an original brass unit from a Ford model A. Rear suspension is helped out with a pair of Bugpack coil-over shocks and provide a smooth ride. The rear tires are Remington 50 series radials mounted on a pair of Cragar rims fitted with adapters to the Neal disk brake hubs. Finally there is a ball hitch that lets me haul my cargo trailer on overnight runs. Total weight is 1025 pounds with 120 of that on the front axial. Total cost to build, well, let's not get into that. :-)
I'd like to show you some of my trikes. I am an active member of the Brothers Of The Third Wheel, an international organization dedicated to trikers everywhere.
